We often think of crane flies, or “Daddy Long Legs” qs they get called in the UK, as those gangly nuisances bouncing off of outside walls in the summer, but what if there was a darker, less coorindationally challenged cousin of the crane fly? That’s what I encountered here on one of my field skills courses in JEsmond dene (I was supposed to be learning about ferns, but the pull of a new bug is strong!)
The taxonomy of flies is poorly understood compared to other families, and from what I could gather these guys are actually distinct to not only the familiar crane fly, but many other flies that foten go by this moniker.
